Overview

Flour Bluff Independent School District was established in 1937. The district encompasses a 156 square mile area (100 square miles of water and 56 square miles of land). The Flour Bluff/Padre Island/NAS community enjoys the advantage of being a part of the metropolitan Corpus Christi (est. pop. 320,434) with all its cultural, economic, and educational benefits. Nevertheless, the community is proud to maintain a separate independent school district emphasizing high standards and local control.

Flour Bluff Junior High School operates on a eight period schedule. The school year is divided into two semesters with three six-week grading periods per semester. Course offerings include: special education, honor/gifted and talented, pre-advanced placement, college & career readiness, and technology courses.

Grading Guidelines: Flour Bluff Junior High School is on a scale of 100. Average daily work and tests make-up 80% of a six weeks grade. Major exams makes up 20% of a six weeks grade. The first semester grade is made up of 1/3 of the First Six Weeks grade, 1/3 of the Second Six Weeks grade and 1/3 of the Third Six Weeks grade. The second semester grade is made up of 1/3 of the Fourth Six Weeks grade, 1/3 of the Fifth Six Weeks grade and 1/3 of the Sixth Six Weeks grade. The yearly average is calculated by averaging 50% of the First Semester Grade and 50% of the Second Semester Grade.

High School Credit Courses: Flour Bluff Junior High students have the availability to earn high school credits at the junior high level. Students at 8th grade level who are enrolled in Algebra I, Geometry, Health, Business Information Management (BIM), Theater Art I, Art I, Communication Applications, Spanish I, Spanish II and Introduction to Engineering will receive high school credit for the grade earned. Students taking Algebra I in junior high will be required to take three additional years of mathematics in high school. These courses will count toward a student’s Grade Point Average in high school. Students at the 7th grade level are offered Spanish I and Algebra I courses for high school credit. Students failing at the end of the first six weeks will be placed on academic probation and removed from the course if student is not passing at Progress Report 2. Students enrolled in Algebra I will be required to take the STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) exam.
